    Day 1

    Tour begins: 6:00 PM, Hotel Majestic Roma. A transfer is included from Rome's Fiumicino and Ciampino airports or Rome's Central and Tiburtina train stations to your hotel, where check-in begins at 2:00 PM. Join us tonight for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner at your ideally located hotel steps from the Trevi Fountain!

    Today's tour with our insider guide presents an overview of Rome's sights, including a visit to St. Peter's Basilica. You'll also enjoy your visit inside the Colosseum - and avoid the lines because we have pre-reserved tickets. As a Tauck Exclusive, join us this evening for an after-hours visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, experiencing their treasures without crowds.


  • Herculaneum / Embark Le Ponant

    Day 3

    Depart for Naples, located on the blue Bay of Naples, stopping en route for a traditional Neapolitan lunch and a visit to Herculaneum. Here you'll discover a town frozen in time in 79 AD by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Studies of the town's ash-covered remains have enabled archaeologists to piece together a picture of daily life here during the Roman Empire. Schedule permitting, tour Naples before embarking your yacht.

    Day 4

    Ride a zodiac ashore to the seaside town of Amalfi for a choice of included shore excursions that each begin with a guided walk to its fascinating cathedral, located up a steep grand stairway. Then, drive along the stunning Amalfi Coast to the cliff-top town of Ravello to visit Villa Rufulo, followed by lunch at a local restaurant, or venture along the windy coastal road to Positano, returning to Amalfi by water aboard a chartered motorboat after lunch. Join us tonight for the captain's welcome festivities as Le Ponant sets sail for Lipari in the Aeolian Islands.

    Day 5

    Lipari's archaeological remains have yielded clues to civilizations dating back to 1700 BC, including Neolithic stones and Greek and Roman ruins. If you wish, discover them on a walking tour with an opportunity to explore the renowned Archaeological Museum on your own. If you prefer, drive across the island to the village of Quattropani for a tour of its organic winery and wind tower and enjoy a wine tasting on its rooftop terrace overlooking beautiful island vistas. Return to your ship for lunch and an afternoon at sea. Weather permitting, dine al fresco on the Sun Deck tonight as we sail by Stromboli, home to one of the world's virtually constant active volcanoes!

    Day 6

    Come ashore in Trapani on the island of Sicily to embark on the included excursion of your choice. Drive to Segesta to see the well-preserved remains of its Greek temple, followed by a locally guided visit and lunch in the medieval hill town of Erice, suspended high above the sea with breathtaking views; ride back down to Trapani by cable car. Or, head out to Spagnola on the famous "Salt Route," flanked by glittering ponds and salt mountains, for a tasting and a tour of a salt museum. Continue to a winery in Marsala to sample a selection of wine paired with local specialties, and enjoy coffee and home-made treats at the home of a baroness, an elegant 18th-century villa lush with gardens. Have dinner at leisure aboard ship.

    Day 7

    Dock in Sicily's capital city of Palermo today, inviting with cultural discoveries for myriad interests. Architectural sites star on a guided excursion that visits the domed Cathedral of Monreale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the pearl of Arab-Norman Art, and an island vineyard where a tasting tour awaits. If Mafia lore sounds intriguing, our walking tour of Palermo with an anti-Mafia Addiopizzo activist showcases places where merchants, businesses and residents are defying Mafia muscle. Your walk ends with an unforgettable visit to a meticulously restored private palazzo. Everyone joins up for an insider tour of the Palermo Opera House followed by time at leisure.

    Day 8

    Tender ashore at Giardini-Naxos for a choice of island sightseeing. Head to cliff-top Taormina for a guided walking tour of the 2nd-century Teatro Greco, a stroll along the Corso Umberto, lined with elegantly restored medieval buildings and shops, and return to the ship for lunch or stay in Taormina as you wish. Or, venture off to Mt. Etna, soaring over the island at 10,723 feet, to explore the villages and landscapes surrounding the hot-headed volcano. Take a cable car up the mountains southern slopes; then continue higher in a special off-road vehicle. Local guides will be on hand to show you the sights. Enjoy a typical lunch before returning to the ship.

    Day 9

    Dock on Ortigia Island for your choice of experiences. Embark on a locally guided visit to ancient Siracusa and the Parco Archaeologico della Neapolis; see the 15,000 seat Greek Theatre and the Latomia del Paradiso, and ancient limestone quarry planted with gardens of orange and olive trees. Continue to Ortigia for a walking tour of the duomo and the 6th-century Temple of Apollo. Or, drive through the countryside to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Noto, a showcase of Baroque architecture. Farewell festivities back aboard ship include the captain's reception and dinner. Sail for Malta this evening.

    Day 10

    Disembark in Valletta on the island of Malta. Sightseeing today includes a drive around colorful St. Julian's Bay, a walking tour of the walled town of Mdina, a visit to the elaborate St. John's Co-Cathedral, richly decorated in silver and gold, and a stop at "the Malta Experience," where an audio-visual show tells the story of the island's 7,000-year history. Settle into your hotel before a farewell reception and dinner in the lavish ballroom of the beautiful Palazzo Parisio, once the hunting lodge of the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of Malta.

    Day 11

    Tour ends: Valletta. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included to the Malta International Airport from the Phoenicia Hotel Malta. Allow a minimum of three hours for your flight check-in at the airport.
